Neighborhoods in Brooklyn

Brooklyn is where students go when they want more room for the money without giving up the commute. Downtown Brooklyn sits on more subway lines than almost anywhere in the city — the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, F, N, Q and R all converge there — so a room in the right part of the borough can reach Lower Manhattan faster than a room in upper Manhattan can. It is also home to Pratt and LIU Brooklyn, and a short ride from NYU and the downtown campuses. What you get for the same rent is usually a noticeably bigger bedroom, and often a real living room rather than a converted one. The trade-off is that Brooklyn is large and uneven: two neighborhoods twenty minutes apart can feel like different cities and price like it too. Downtown Brooklyn

The transit hub of the borough and LIU Brooklyn’s doorstep. Mostly newer residential towers, with almost every subway line you would want and a one-stop ride into Lower Manhattan.

Clinton Hill & Fort Greene

Pratt sits in the middle of Clinton Hill, and Fort Greene next door is brownstone blocks, a big park, and a quieter pace. The G and C put you in touch with the rest of Brooklyn and Manhattan respectively.

Bedford-Stuyvesant

Wide streets, classic brownstones, and some of the better value in north Brooklyn. The A and C run express toward Manhattan, and the G connects across the borough for Pratt and LIU students.

Williamsburg & Greenpoint

The L gets you to Union Square in about fifteen minutes, which makes it a realistic NYU commute. Busier and pricier than the rest of north Brooklyn, with the most nightlife of any neighborhood on this list.

Crown Heights & Prospect Heights

Prospect Park on one side, museums and the botanic garden on the other, and the 2, 3, 4 and 5 running straight into Manhattan. Rooms here tend to be larger than equivalent money north of the park.

Park Slope

Residential, leafy and settled, right on Prospect Park. Quieter than most of this list and priced accordingly, but the F, G, R, 2 and 3 all serve it, so nothing is far.
