Neighborhoods in the Bronx

The Bronx is the most affordable borough in New York City, and for students whose campus is uptown it is often the obvious answer rather than a compromise. The 1, 2, 4, 5, B and D all run into Manhattan, and the Metro-North gets from Fordham to Grand Central in about twenty minutes — faster than plenty of Manhattan-to-Manhattan trips. Fordham’s Rose Hill campus is here, Columbia and City College are a short ride down the west side, and the south Bronx is closer to Midtown than most of Brooklyn is. What you get for the money is space: rooms in pre-war buildings that would be described as generous anywhere else in the city. Mott Haven & Port Morris

The south Bronx, and closer to Midtown than most of Brooklyn — the 4, 5 and 6 put you at Grand Central in around twenty minutes. Converted industrial buildings and newer waterfront developments, at some of the lowest rents this close to Manhattan.

Fordham & Belmont

Fordham’s Rose Hill campus, the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Garden are all here, and Belmont’s Arthur Avenue is the real Little Italy of New York. Metro-North reaches Grand Central in about twenty minutes; the B, D and 4 are the cheaper way in.

Riverdale

Green, hilly and quiet, overlooking the Hudson at the northwest corner of the borough. The 1 train and Metro-North both serve it, and it is a genuinely residential choice for students who want calm over convenience.

Kingsbridge & Van Cortlandt

The 1 and 4 both run here, with Van Cortlandt Park — one of the largest parks in the city — on the doorstep. Straightforward commutes to Columbia and City College at well below west-side Manhattan prices.

Concourse

Built along the Grand Concourse, an avenue of art-deco apartment buildings, with the B, D and 4 running its length. Yankee Stadium is here, and Midtown is roughly twenty-five minutes away.

Pelham Parkway & Morris Park

Low-rise and residential in the east Bronx, near the medical campuses, on the 2 and 5. Among the quietest and most affordable options in the whole city.
